In creating a classroom culture, we have a choice in how we lead the children. The results will be different if an educator begins reciting rules. When educators are calm and positive, even when a child's action is challenging, the learning community will observe how to treat others. The way educators approach a challenging situation influences children. Giving children direction based on rules feels effective at the moment but never offers lasting results and interferes with the learning community's collaborative actions. There are days as an educator when we feel less resilient and want to tell children what to do. What influence does an educator have in the choices children make?Įducators are the model for children to work together in a learning community. A good practice is to respond to each challenge by talking with the children involved and inviting children to talk with each other. If children engage in challenging actions, there is a need for an adult response. With agreements in place, our classroom still encounters behavior challenges. Agreements are ideas that groups of people create through negotiation to provide a baseline that guides specific actions. Guidance focuses on agreements and is different from rules. Rules are standard in school and at home, and children have little input into creating rules. Rules for children originate from an outside source. I like to create agreements instead of regulations. This boosts how we feel at the end of the day and enhances each child’s success as a learner. We also actively plan for guidance, which keeps a positive climate in our classroom. A wide range of factors defines children's actions, but all behavior has a purpose, to gain something.ĭiscipline is rule-focused and compliance-focused, while guidance is engagement-focused and learning-focused. Powerful Interactions are interactions in which a teacher intentionally connects with a child to extend his or her learning. The definition of discipline is "Training to act in accordance with rules." Meaning all children's actions originate from rules instead of other factors. The difference between guidance and discipline is engagement. The second is the preconceived idea an educator has about children's actions. The first is children's actions an educator disagrees with. Conversations with school-age educators often focus on one topic, children's actions, and often center around two main issues.
